The Stop Ahead Symbol sign (MUTCD W3-1) is a warning sign used to inform drivers that they will soon encounter a stop sign, at which they must make a full stop. It is designed according to the guidelines set by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which is a publication that provides standards and guidelines for traffic control devices on all public roads.
The W3-1 sign consists of a diamond shape with a black border and a yellow background. Inside the diamond, there is a symbol depicting a red octagonal stop sign ahead, with the word 'STOP' written in white letters inside the red octagon. The purpose of this sign is to alert drivers to the upcoming stop sign, especially in situations where the stop sign itself may not be immediately visible or when additional warning is necessary due to road conditions or other factors.
By placing the Stop Ahead Symbol sign in advance of the actual stop sign, drivers are given adequate notice to prepare for the stop.
